Lutan was no friend of the two-legged human race. Oh, it wasn't that he hated them, or even particularly disliked them. He just thought that there were superior creatures born of the creation, and that humans had very little to offer the world he knew. Leagi were of course amongst these superior races, though he did not fool himself into such arrogance that they may be the finest of them all. There was much competition and hard to judge one species talents against anothers. It was just the humans had so little going for them. He wondered what it would be like to be one of those poor beings. Could not hear a mouse rustling through the grasses, could not smell the scent of one's mate, could see poorly in the dark. And those two legs offered them no speed, stability or agility. It freed their hands, but to do what? Scratch their back? He could do that upon the ground or against a tree. And without fur or hair they had to resort to dressing themselves in the pelts of others. The human stumbled over a tree root, then pushed its way through the thick brush. It made as much noise as a herd of elephants in a mad stampede. Yes, he knew about elephants, just as he knew about humans. And as he lay his head back down to continue his nap, he decided he had more respect for the elephants than the men. |
